๐ DMT
N,N-Dimethyltryptamine
Overview
DMT is perhaps the most mysterious psychedelic. When smoked or vaporized, it produces an extremely rapid onset (seconds) and an overwhelmingly intense experience lasting 5โ20 minutes. Users frequently report contact with "entities," geometric visions of impossible complexity, and a sense of entering another dimension entirely. When consumed orally with an MAO inhibitor (as in ayahuasca), the experience is longer, slower, and more narratively coherent.
Endogenous DMT
DMT is produced naturally in the human body โ it's been detected in cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and urine. Its endogenous role remains unknown. Rick Strassman's research at the University of New Mexico in the 1990s popularized the "spirit molecule" framing, though his pineal gland hypothesis remains speculative.
Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a brew traditionally prepared by indigenous Amazonian peoples, combining DMT-containing plants (usually Psychotria viridis) with an MAO-inhibiting vine (Banisteriopsis caapi). The MAOI prevents gut enzymes from breaking down DMT, making it orally active. Ayahuasca has a rich ceremonial tradition and is increasingly studied for depression and addiction.
Harm Reduction
- Smoked DMT is intense beyond description at full doses โ have a sitter, be seated or lying down.
- Ayahuasca + MAOI interactions are serious. SSRIs and ayahuasca can cause serotonin syndrome, which is potentially fatal.
- Dietary restrictions matter with ayahuasca (tyramine-containing foods + MAOIs = hypertensive crisis).
- Physical toxicity of DMT itself is low.
