🌵 Mescaline
3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine
Class: Phenethylamine · Duration: 8–12 hours · Onset: 1–2 hours · Source: Peyote, San Pedro, Peruvian Torch
Overview
Mescaline is one of the oldest known psychedelics, used ceremonially for at least 5,700 years. It produces a warm, visual, deeply embodied experience often described as more "earthy" or "grounded" than LSD or psilocybin. Colors become saturated, patterns emerge in textures, and many report a profound sense of connection to the natural world.
History
The Huichol (Wixáritari) people of Mexico and the Native American Church have used peyote (Lophophora williamsii) ceremonially for millennia. Arthur Heffter first isolated mescaline in 1897. Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception (1954) described his mescaline experience and became a foundational text of psychedelic literature.
Harm Reduction
- Very long duration — plan for a full day.
- Nausea is common, especially with cactus preparations. Some consider it part of the experience.
- Peyote is endangered and sacred. San Pedro is more sustainable and more widely available.
- Low physiological toxicity. Same general psychological cautions as other psychedelics.
